DIRECTOR OF CATHEDRAL LITURGICAL MUSIC PROGRAM
CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

Summary of Position

The Director of the Cathedral Liturgical Music Program is a full time position and is supervised by the Rector and Pastor of the Cathedral Parish. Responsible for the overall execution of the Cathedral Liturgical Music Program, Choir, Scholae and Cantors.  In cooperation with the Rector and Pastor of the Cathedral Basilica, reviews all liturgical music programs, policies, procedures, and budgets for the Cathedral Liturgical Music Program.  In terms of Archdiocesan celebrations and events, confers with the Director of the Office for Divine Worship.

Principal Duties

  • Promotes an authentic liturgical music formation and celebrations at the Cathedral Basilica
  • Directs the Cathedral Basilica Choir
  • Coordinates the Cathedral Basilica Choir with regard to rehearsals, schedules and auditions
  • Prepares and rehearses cantors, psalmists and scholae for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy
  • May serve as the principal organist for Cathedral Basilica and Archdiocesan celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy
  • Oversees the maintenance of the areas used by the choir and instruments, especially the organ
  • Coordinates the hiring and reimbursement of other musicians as needed for Cathedral Basilica and Archdiocesan celebrations
  • Assists visiting cantors, choirs and other liturgical musicians to the Cathedral Basilica
  • Oversees office work associated with the Cathedral Liturgical Program (in the Pastoral Center)
  • Directs and oversees the duties of the choir librarian and archives
  • Plans and reviews the liturgical repertory for Cathedral Basilica and Archdiocesan celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy with the Rector and Pastor of the Cathedral Parish and Director of the Office for Worship, respectively
  • Coordinates liturgical music for the planning of Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and other sacramental celebrations at the Cathedral Basilica
  • Prepares the annual budget for the Liturgical Music Program
  • Participates in periodic review with the Rector and Pastor of the Cathedral Parish
  • Other duties as assigned

Archdiocesan Duties

  • Coordinates the Archdiocesan Choir with regard to direction, rehearsals, schedules and auditions
  • Coordinates the Archdiocesan Boy and Girl Choir with regard to direction, rehearsals, schedules, and auditions
  • Coordinates the Archdiocesan Formation Programs in conjunction with the Office for Divine Worship, especially the Basilica Academy.
  • Plans and conducts the annual Advent-Christmas concert in the Cathedral Basilica
  • Prepares the annual budget for the Archdiocesan liturgical music program

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Master’s Degree in music or equivalent professional experience
  • Proficient organ performance and excellent directing skills
  • Excellent skills in administration, communication, collaboration, organization and supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Pastoral experience in the Sacred Liturgy and Liturgical Music
  • Availability to carryout responsibilities in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Membership in professional organizations
  • Active member of the Church and registered in his/her parish
