Religious Education for Children
Cathedral Sacramental Preparation 2024-2025
The Cathedral Parish will offer classes again this coming year for children who need to prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
Please remember – This is NOT a full religious education program.
Your child may attend these classes whether he or she is attending a Catholic school in the Archdiocese, is in a religious education program at another parish, is NOT in religious education, or is in a home-based program.
There will be a section of each class for primarily English-speaking children/families, and another for primarily Spanish-speaking children/families.
Children coming for First Holy Communion preparation will be prepared for the Sacrament of Penance during the fall; after New Year classes will focus on the Holy Eucharist and specific preparation for First Holy Communion. Confirmation preparation will follow the same schedule.
Registration for this year has closed, and classes for sacramental preparation at the Cathedral Parish have begun!

The Sacrament of Confirmation for school aged children will be on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the 11:00 AM Solemn Mass.
First Holy Communion will be on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at the 11:00 AM Solemn Mass.

Cathedral Sacramental Preparation 2025 – 2026
Mark your calendars for important dates for the 2025 -2026 Sacrament Preparation Year!
- Registration: April 1, 2025 – June 30, 2025
- Day of Service & Kick-Off Celebration: Sunday, September 28, 2025
- First Holy Communion: Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the 11 AM Solemn Mass
- Confirmation: Sunday, April 12, 2026 at the 11 AM Solemn Mass
Preparation is available to children of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for both First Holy Communion and Confirmation, and classes are provided in English and Spanish-English bilingual formats. English-language preparation is held on Tuesday afternoons, and Spanish-English bilingual preparation is held Sunday mornings before the Spanish-language Mass.
To make this process as clear and simple as possible so that we can focus on the formation of our children, here is a brief overview of the expectations and requirements:
To Participate in Sacrament Preparation:
- Registration
- Children are eligible for First Holy Communion starting in 2nd grade
- Children are eligible for Confirmation starting in 7th grade
- Copies of Certificates for Sacraments Received
- Letter of Eligibility for Sponsor (Confirmation Candidates Only)
- Letter of Permission from Parish to Receive Sacrament(s) at the Cathedral Basilica (Non-Cathedral Parish Participants Only)
