The Cathedral Basilica is also home to the Memorial of Venerable Cornelia Connelly, a Philadelphia-born wife, mother, convert, educator, and foundress. Born in Philadelphia in 1809, Cornelia experienced profound loss and hardship throughout her life. Her journey eventually led her to the Catholic faith and to the founding of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Her life was marked by remarkable courage and fidelity amid suffering.

Cornelia’s vocation took an unexpected path. She was a wife and mother before becoming a religious foundress and educator. She devoted herself to the formation and education of young people and founded the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, whose mission eventually spread throughout the world. Her life reminds us that God can work through every season of a person’s life—even those marked by uncertainty, sacrifice, and suffering.

The Venerable Cornelia Connelly Memorial and Holy Child Shrine were blessed at the Cathedral Basilica on October 17, 2021. The image of the Holy Child reflects Cornelia’s spirituality of joyful trust and her commitment to educating and forming young people. The Shrine stands as another reminder within the Cathedral that holiness is lived through fidelity to Christ in the circumstances of one’s own vocation.
